Garage Door Openers

Submitted By: Garage Door Mart

There are many things to consider when deciding on a garage door opener for your garage.  There are several different types of garage door openers that use different mechanisms and vary in noise and power usage.  It is important to note that since 1993 it has been a federal law that all automatic garage door openers must come equipped with sensors to reverse the door if anything is detected within the track of the door as it closes.  It is highly recommended that you replace your garage door opener if it is too old to have this safety feature.  The different styles of openers vary in price, noise, power, maintenance, and installation and a trained professional can help you decide which opener best suits your garage.

The most commonly used garage door opener is the chain drive opener.   Chain drive openers lift the garage door by pulling a trolley which is attached to the door with a chain.  The chain is pulled by either a ½ or ¾ horsepower motor.  This is the loudest garage door opener but also the least expensive.  A screw drive opener works similarly to the chain drive except it uses a threaded steel rod rotated by the motor to drive the trolley closer.  Screw drive openers are a little more expensive than chain drives; however, they are quieter than chain drives and have less moving parts, which require less maintenance.  Belt drives lift the garage door with a rubber belt reinforced with metal in place of a chain or a screw.  These openers are the quietest garage door openers but they are also the most expensive.

If you are looking for a quieter opener without paying for the more expensive garage door openers, there are options to consider.  One option is a soundproofing kit.  Soundproofing kits were developed to prevent the vibration of the garage door from penetrating into the surrounding rooms.  Another option to consider is a garage door opener with an internal system that isolates the vibration of the motor.  Some brands and models of garage door openers come standard with this feature to help cut down on noise.  Since choosing a garage door opener involves much consideration, do not hesitate to contact a professional garage door technician for any questions or concerns. read more
